Make More Money: Clear Unconcious Self-Sabotage with HBLUTM

Boston Women’s Journal 2006 Published as Part I and Part II April/May and June/July 2006

Unless you were lucky enough to inherit a fortune, you probably work for a living. You might think that everyone feels they don’t make enough money, but in the case of many of my clients it was true. Why weren’t they being paid well enough for what they do, or why can’t they find a job that pays well enough for their skill set? Surprisingly, many of them were unconsciously sabotaging themselves. Many of these self-sabotage patterns created irrational shame or fear that caused them to hold back. Even mild reactions can cause avoidance or confusion that drains energy and suppresses motivation, enthusiasm, and confidence. People do not perform at their best, are afraid to ask for the salary they want or look for a better job, and feel dissatisfied and unfulfilled.

Common reactions that interfere with making money:

I’m afraid to be successful because:

  • someone will take it away from me.
  • women/people will reject me.
  • I’ll be expected to succeed again and I’ll be under constant pressure.
  • I’ll be expected to top my last performance, and I’ll fail.

I’m afraid people will be jealous of me and:

  • want to destroy me.
  • will reject me.
  • it will tear my family apart.

I’m afraid to go all out because:

  • I’ll be unpopular.
  • I’ll physically get hurt, or hurt someone else (athlete).

Fears about work:

  • I’m afraid to be ambitious because I’ll be swallowed up in my work and lose my (quality of) life.
  • I’m ashamed to earn a living using my talents because they are a gift from God and I should share them with everyone for free.
  • I’m afraid to have people pay me because then I’ll have to meet my commitments and be trapped in slavery to them.
  • I’m worthless; and can’t compete because… They can get someone else to do the job better (or more cheaply).
  • I have to have a job or career that someone else expects or they won’t love me and will abandon me.

Success Stories

Marie, an expert communications consultant, constantly struggled to make her business financially viable. Although her credentials and track record were excellent, she found it unnerving, awkward, and difficult to charge full fee for services, ask clients to commit to contracts, and wholeheartedly pursue new business. Using HBLUTM, Marie discovered that she was unconsciously affected by her family patterns: money was always tight, and conversations about money were always stressful. Marie also carried her father’s feeling of unworthiness about making a substantial salary. After clearing these attitudes, Marie learned that 1) money is not elitist 2) you receive money in exchange for goods or services, and 3) financial success is linked to the quality of and need for the products you provide. Money is not about personal worth. Marie now finds it easy and rewarding to interact with customers and develop new business.

Paula is a dedicated social worker who cares deeply about helping people in trouble. Although she has a Master’s degree, and is a licensed professional with 15+ years of experience, she worked for an agency that didn’t even pay her enough to rent her own apartment. Even worse, her manager was overbearing, and the agency was very dysfunctional. Using HBLUTM, Paula healed the beliefs that the people who need her the most can’t afford to pay, and it’s holy to help everyone for free. She also healed the dysfunctional family patterns that she was playing out at work. She found another job doing what she loves and is best at. Her new manager is fine, the agency has only typical organization problems, and the salary is so much better that she just moved in to her own apartment.

Eric got an MBA from an Ivy league school and started an innovative multi-million dollar business with his wife. Ten years later he lost his wife, his home, and his business in an explosive divorce. Desperate to recoup his losses, he gambled his remaining assets on risky investments and ended up several hundred thousand dollars in debt. Eric remarried and became a business consultant and executive coach. Eric suspected that the wild oscillations in his income were related to trauma, so he sought HBLUTM treatment. Interestingly, Eric’s father had been a highly successful businessman who went bankrupt just a few months before his death. As a father, he was cruel, distant, and competitive. After a few months of HBLUTM therapy, Eric cleared the unconscious habits of trying to earn his father’s respect and love by proving that he could be more financially successful than his father. He quit making risky “get rich quick” investments and focused on doing what he was brilliant at. After one year he made enough money to pay back half his debt. After two years, he paid off the rest. His income continues to rise linearly.

There are two other major categories of problems with making money. These are mainly toxic belief systems (patterns of cultural brainwashing) prevalent in our culture that cause people to:

  • have problems holding on to the money
  • wait for someone else to make money for them.

Two common toxic belief systems that cause “I can’t hold on to money” are:

  • The Holiness Program that says that being Holy and doing my soul mission requires sacrifice, suffering, and misery. Popular requirements for being holy also include poverty, failure, celibacy, asceticism, martyrdom, persecution, death, loneliness, isolation, lovelessness, depression, frustration, exhaustion, illness, and pain. Ironically, poverty and failure are more likely to inhibit a person’s ability to work, be productive and make a contribution to the world than vice-versa.
  • The Scarcity Program that says there are only a limited amount of resources to go around. If you have money then somebody else does not, and therefore you can’t have something without hurting someone else. The guilt that this produces causes people to give away what they have, or turn down opportunities for success.

Two common toxic belief systemsthat cause “Someone else will make money for me” are:

  • The Dependency program that says you can’t survive on your own, the world is a dangerous and cruel place, and therefore you must be dependent on someone else to take care of you. This pattern causes people, particularly women, to seem financially independent, but in fact they just get by rather than being really successful.
  • The Gender program that says women are inferior to men and need to find a man to survive. In order to do so, a woman can’t be too bright, successful, or powerful and still be attractive to men.

Success Stories

Samantha inherited money from her family. Suddenly she felt that she no longer needed to work and resigned from teaching. Her life began to feel meaningless and she felt guilty about having money she didn’t earn and felt she didn’t deserve. She confided that “having money ruined my life.” After clearing her Holiness and Scarcity programs she decided to use the money in the service of her soul. She renovated her home, pursued further spiritual training, and developed a wonderful relationship with a loving man who “would do anything for her.” She also went back to teaching realizing that it was an important way of making her soul contribution… she hadn’t been doing it solely for the money. Her life feels meaningful and rewarding.

Marian had a successful therapy practice until she moved in with James, a nice Jewish doctor. Suddenly her case load diminished dramatically. James told her not to worry; he would support her for a while. Her motivation to market herself disappeared. When her case load didn’t increase after a year, Marian’s self-esteem started to slip while James got angry and resentful. After clearing her dependency and gender programs, Marian filled her practice and finds her work very satisfying. James is happy and feels more secure about the relationship.

Georgia was raised during the forties and fifties the only girl in a family of 5 brothers. Discipline was administered in the form of beating, and hunting was the family’s favorite sport. It’s no surprise that Georgia married and divorced two abusive husbands while raising two children. Realizing that she needed to be self-sufficient, and being an exceptionally bright and talented woman, Georgia got a doctorate in organizational development and worked as a top executive in a fortune 500 company. After 20 years, she hit the glass ceiling, burned out, and quit to start her own business consulting and executive coaching company. Never having been great with her personal finances, Georgia found herself approaching 60 with no retirement savings. She was also having difficulty making ends meet with contracts few and far between. After a year of HBLUTM therapy, Georgia healed her fear of men and male authority figures, and cleared her beliefs that women are not supposed to make a lot of money. She is now earning 6 figures, accumulating retirement savings, and developing a serious relationship with a kind, delightful, and accomplished man.
